Tata Mumbai Marathon is the largest marathon in Asia and also the largest mass participation sporting event on the continent with over 50,000 participants in 2020. It is the richest race in India with a prize pool of USD 405,000. The Tata Mumbai Marathon is one amongst the top 10 marathon events in the world.

OP Jaisha is the current national record holder in the full marathon at 2015 World Championships held in Beijing by clocking 2:34:43. This qualified her for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she finished the marathon and attained 89th place.

Shivnath Singh set the national record in a marathon in 1978 in Jalandhar, with the timing of 2:12:00.

Avinash Sable smashes the national record and becomes the first Indian to run a half marathon in less than 61 minutes (as of 8 April 2022) winning the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2020.

Nitendra Singh Rawat became the fastest Indian ever to finish Boston Marathon 2021 as of 8 April 2022. He finished the 42.1km course with a time of 2:22:01s.
